Winter hikes, ice fishing classes and more!
The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, at the popular Mitchell State Park, offers a range of programs for all ages. Visitors are greeted by a 500 gallon aquarium showcasing the fish of Lake Mitchell and Lake Cadillac. The fishing exhibit hall also has a 200 gallon aquarium featuring arctic grayling which are part of a reintroduction effort. The grounds includes both archery and pellet gun ranges and offers scheduled shooting programs throughout the summer. Follow their Facebook page for timely updates!
Check out the Outdoor Skills Academy classes that are scheduled for the 2023 year at the Carl T Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center in Mitchell State Park. You will find a wide variety of topics covered including: fishing, hunting, cooking, survival, maple syruping, food plots, and trapping. Call 231-779-1321 with any questions, the center is open on Saturdays and Sundays 10am to 4:30pm all winter long.

The center offers group tours and guided hikes which explore the 2.5-mile Heritage Nature Trail leading through the woodland and Heritage Marsh. In the winter season, lantern lit snowshoe hikes are offered on Friday nights in January and February with a campfire and hot chocolate from 6pm to 9pm. Snowshoes are available or you can bring your own.

The campground is now closed in preparation for construction. The south bath building will be demolished and replaced. Improvements to roads in the campground are also on the agenda. There will be no more winter camping at Mitchell State Park. The number of winter campers has diminished over the years and it is not fiscally responsible to have winter camping. If all goes as planned the campground
should be open in May.
